A Duality Model of TCP Congestion Controls

چکیده
In this paper we propose a uniied optimization model of TCP ow control based on duality theory. We show that TCP Reno and TCP Vegas, with or without random marking, can be regarded as carrying out a dual method to maximize aggregate source utility. Diierent schemes correspond to diierent choices of source utility functions, and we derive these utility functions. This implies in particular that TCP Reno, with or without random marking, attempts to equalize window, and discriminates against sources with large propagation delays as observed in many previous studies. This feature is used to validate our model with preliminary simulation results.

An Empirical Validation of a Duality Model of Tcp and Queue Management Algorithms
In this paper we validate through simulations a duality model of TCP and active queue management (AQM) proposed earlier. In this model, TCP and AQM are modeled as carrying out a distributed primal-dual algorithm over the Internet to maximize aggregate source utility. TCP congestion avoidance algorithms, such as Reno and Vegas, iterate on source rates, the primal variable. AQM algorithms, such a...

In this paper we propose a duality model of congestion control and apply it to TCP and active queue management schemes. Congestion control is the interaction of source rates with certain congestion measures in the network. The basic idea is to regard source rates as primal variables and congestion measures as dual variables, and congestion control as a Lagrangian method that iterates on source ...
متن کاملUnderstanding Vegas: a duality model
We view congestion control as a distributed primal-dual algorithm carried out by sources and links over a network to solve a global optimization problem. We describe a multi-link multi-source model of the TCP Vegas congestion control mechanism. The model provides a fundamental understanding of delay, fairness and loss properties of TCP Vegas. It implies that Vegas stabilizes around a weighted p...
متن کاملDuality-based Tcp Congestion Control with Error Analysis
We review optimization models for congestion control, focusing on the dual of a widely studied utility maximization problem. We show that many congestion control algorithms can be modeled within this framework, and conversely, standard techniques for iterative optimization can inspire practical congestion control algorithms. This previous work all assumes precise feedback of congestion informat...
متن کاملOptimization and Stability of TCP/IP with Delay-Sensitive Utility Functions
TCP/IP can be interpreted as a distributed primal-dual algorithm to maximize aggregate utility over source rates. It has recently been shown that an equilibrium of TCP/IP, if it exists, maximizes the same aggregate utility function over both source rates and routes, provided pure congestion prices are used as link costs in the shortest-path calculation of IP. Moreover, the utility functions are...
